Nothing here is vegetarian, quoth the Hannibal (I might be paraphrasing). Hungry Ghosts from the late Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose is, if a comic can be said to be so, far from vegetarian. In the collection of eerie tales centered around food, we have a variety of short stories which draw on mythology and food.
There are some really great looking titles at this year’s festival covering everything from a slasher set in a water park (Aquaslash) to Nazi flying sharks (Sky Sharks)…yes, you read correctly. Nazi flying sharks.
Fried Barry gleefully presents a surreal, disturbing, and fun trip through the recesses of Cape Town. This is due to a mixture of a kinetic direction and editing. And most importantly, the striking presence of lead actor Gary Green who plays the eponymous Fried Barry: ‘a drug-addled bastard’ who is abducted and then possessed by an alien tourist.
The self published Dynamic Duo responsible for The Soccer Mom Killer are author Stephen Hines and artist Nela Vohenska and if I were to offer you a one line summary, a HoH spoiler free trailer, so to speak, of their work on S.M.K I would say to you that it is a community based story with shades of Se7en told in a style that evokes Charles Burns classic Black Hole.
From Hell is about Jack the Ripper, except it's also about London and architecture and morality and so many other things that it would take more than a short piece to cover them all. You would need something the size of a doorstop- which is exactly what From Hell is. It is truly a graphic novel, a comic that has all the complexity of a novel, but told primarily through the amazing artwork of Eddie Campbell...
